What can we expect at the Weekend School?

We focus on all-round musical theatre training for people aged 18 months -25, providing our members with 4 hours (not just 3!) of training each Sunday. Members meet 5 different teachers covering 5 disciplines every week, with the member experience at the forefront of everything we do.

Every week, members get:
An acting class, a singing class, a dance class plus a musical theatre performance class and one other class in any one of the disciplines.

Industry Masterclass:
At least once a term we will also be bringing in a Industry professional to come and run sessions for our members - this is all included in the weekly cost!

What time do the sessions run?

King Arts Academy Weekend School runs on Sundays, split into 11 age groups:

09:00-10:00 (Under 5's)
10:00-14:00 (Juniors)
14:30-18:30 (Seniors)

Do you offer any additional classes to the Weekend School?

Yes! King Arts Academy has optional classes that members can do in addition to their weekend school training. These include (click on the class name to take you to the correct page):

Question 5

Is there a uniform?

Yes, we ask all members to buy a King Arts Academy t-shirt and bottoms as part of their uniform, and we ask them to wear this each week.

Question 6

Do I have to audition for the Weekend School?

Accepted Answer

Yes, prospective members have to audition to get in to the school. The audition process is very informal, and prospective members do not need to prepare anything. They take part in the classes that are running on the day and will be observed by a member of the team.

On the other hand, our Singing Troupes do not require an audition and are open to anybody!

What are you looking for in an audition?

We recognise that young people may not have any formal training or qualifications. We are looking for people who are keen and enthusiastic about performing, who take part in all the classes (even if it is not a discipline that they feel confident in), and demonstrate a level of talent and commitment to learning.

We aren't necessarily looking for the best actors/singers/dancers, but we are looking for those that we see are trainable.

Do I need to have previous experience?

Previous experience is helpful but we are looking to welcome you/your child in a fun performance environment and previous experiences are not required. We just ask that you/your child is enthusiastic and willing to learn.

Will I be training with children of a different age to me?

The Weekend School is split into 11 age group classes, so the members train alongside people of a similar age.

What do I need to bring each week?

We ask all members to bring a bottle of water – we have water fountains that they can use to refill bottles.

We will make sure all students have a break so please bring a small lunch/snack box.

We ask all members to bring a pair of trainers or soft dance shoes each week to change in to (not outdoor shoes), to protect the dance floors at the school.

What do I need to wear each week?

We ask all members wear their King Arts Academy t-shirts and bottoms each week. These can be purchased from the company shop and are mandatory. We have other clothing items which you can wear as well ie crop tops, leotards, shorts.

We ask all members to bring a pair of trainers or soft dance shoes each week to change in to (not outdoor shoes), to protect the dance floors at the school.

Do you do any performances or productions?

Yes! We plan to do a full-scale, huge showcase every 2-3 years, with performance opportunities in between this such as a summer show for the afternoon school or small-scale performance viewings.

Each member will also be a part of at least ONE professionally recorded and filmed piece each year to be uploaded to our Youtube Channel!

Can I defer my place?

Accepted Answer

Yes you can, and providing there is space when you want to rejoin then there is no need to re-audition.

How much does the weekend school cost?

Accepted Answer

The main school costs £7.50 per hour to be paid on a monthly basis (approx £120 a month), with a one month notice period if you wish to withdraw. Members will also need to buy a t-shirt and bottoms which vary in costs depending on the size.

King Arts Academy does not accept childcare vouchers or similar at this time.

Do you offer any fee waivers or scholarships?

No, currently there are no scholarship or fee waiver options available for members.

What are your safeguarding protocols?

All members of staff at King Arts Academy must have a DBS check. If visiting artists do not hold a DBS check they will be monitored by Academy staff.

Do you accommodate any SEN or additional needs?

Yes, we ask that you email info@kingartsacademy.com to discuss the specific needs of you/ your child in order to take part and we can establish how we can accommodate them and welcome them to King Arts Academy. We do not place any barriers to participation and want every child to thrive and enjoy the thrill of performing.

Can I watch my child in classes?

We don't allow parents/ guardians/ family members to watch classes, but if you have a concern about your child taking part then you are welcome to wait in reception whilst the classes are going on.

Is there any parking on site?

Yes, at Ipswich Academy there is a full car park as well as an area for drop offs only.
